Caring for Plants by Hye-young Pyun

이미지
Rating:6/10  This short story starts with an accident scene from the beginning. A nurse in the hospital showed that he was seriously injured but survived, and his wife died. I think the problem started with the fact that it was his wife's mother who took care of him. While hiring caregivers, he lives with a lot of help because there are many things he cannot do alone. Of course, this process was not smooth, but the problem began at some point when his mother dug pits in the yard, hired a theraphist, but she didn't call it a starting point, and when he could return to his job as he worked as a teacher in the past, she said he wouldn't. In fact, I had a creepy feeling from this part. However, digging a hole to plant plants made him think that she was trying to kill and bury him by digging a suspiciously large hole in a corner where he could not see well, and covering it with a tarpaulin on the day she called someone. As mentioned above, I thought the fact that she had a grud

A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin

이미지
Rating:7.5/10    In the story, she said she had to find a job as a cleaning woman so she told her alcoholic husband died leaving four children behind. At first I thought she lied to get along, but later I thought that maybe it is just because it was unwilling truth. Also, the part that seemed to reflect the writer was the part that showed her hard days, and she steals sleeping pills unlike the various items that other cleaners steal. Thinking about this, she was probably trying to commit suicide because it was a very harsh situation.  Thinking about the story again, she made her own unique manuals by visiting and interacting with many people's homes as a cleaning woman. There was talk of feminism, there was a description of these poor low-income people, and you could think about the United States of America at that time, about the 1980s. Personally, rather than talking deeply about one topic, I thought that various topics might have been incorporated into the images depicted by ha

The Semplica-Girl Diaries- by George Saunders

이미지
The Semplica-Girl Diaries- by George Saunders Rating:7/10   First of all, it was written in the form of a diary, so it felt very unique from the perspective of reading it. I think I got to think about wealth. It was a real shock to be a Semplica Girl. In fact, I couldn't believe that people in areas like Laos were acting as living dolls to make money, but I couldn't believe the scene where they said it wasn't sad because they made money and gave their families a better life. However, at the same time, I felt that SG was recognized as a symbol of wealth. Also, I thought that it didn’t make sense to feel liberated by winning the lottery,by taking away the freedom of Semplica Girl. It may be a little out of the blue, but Kyle came to mind in Victory Lap. It's not a good thing to see, but anyway, I thought that the situation that provided SG with a job was similar to Kyle's situation, which saved Alison from the kidnapper but broke the kidnapper's head. I

Sticks- by George Saunders

이미지
Sticks- by George Saunders  Rating:7.5/10   When Kimmie was screaming on Christmas Eve just because a piece of apple, I thought he was simply a crazy father. But looking at the cross-shaped stick I could find some unusual things. There were several scenes, starting with simply a sports event related to the Golden Ball, dressing and putting on makeup as if he were dealing with his wife after her death, hanging a letter, and tying the words love and forgive. When celebrating sports events or holidays, I thought it was just for fun, but I thought that the stick represented father's life when he treated stick as his wife, when he wrote letters or hung words. I also thought that the scene where a young couple came in and the stick was thrown away also meant the end of father's .  And maybe he loves his kids but the way he shows it is so complicated for kids to unndertand.   This was the shortest story I have read, but I think it contains deep meanings and metaphors so that i

The Lottery- by Shirley Jackson (1948)

이미지
The Lottery- by Shirley Jackson (1948) Rating:7/10   The first thing I thought about after reading the short story was that it was a beautiful day mentioned in the first article and that the article went in a completely different direction from the title of "the lottery". There were already villages that did not do lottery, but in this village where it was implemented and regarded as a culture, even if a person named Tessie shouted that it was not fair, she had to be ignored by his family and hit by a stone.   Honestly, I felt blank at first when I saw the scene where villagers threw stones casually.   I don't think anyone's sacrifice will enrich the town, even if someone's sacrifice can enrich the town, it is still a debatable subject. I thought about the absurd trolley problem, and I thought my choice would be different if I was in a situation or if my family and acquaintances were there. I was able to look back and reflect on the dark inside of human

The Dead-By James Joyce(1914)

이미지
The Dead-By James Joyce(1914) Rating:6/10 Two themes came to mind when I read 'The Dead'. The first is paralysis, which has been mentioned in previous stories. The song sung by one person at the end of the party reminds Gretta of a man she loved in the past. Gretta was paralyzed as she recalled the man she loved, Furey, facing death, and her husband Gabriel looked at such a wife and learned that it was because of the man she loved in the past. But I thought it wasn't just over here. Gabriel thought about himself at first, but it seems that this idea spread and made him think about his wife and even others. I thought this was also connected to death. Starting with Furey's death, I thought maybe death would be similar to snow covering Ireland. Like the snow that slowly accumulates in the people there without going away, death may not seem like my job and it may seem like someone else's, but I thought it was not. I think it was the longest story I've ever read

About James Joyce

In So far, we have learned about James Joyce through ‘the Sisters’, ‘Arabi’ and ‘Eveline’. When I read these short stories in order, the first thing I thought about was that the characters that make up these stories are slowly growing. There was a little boy and a boy who grew up little more and fell in love with the girl next door and a lady with the sailor. In this context, if I read more stories in the future, I expect that character in the story will grow and finally deal with the death of one person. In addition, reading James Joyce's stories, I began to think that all the dramatic and exaggerated stories are not shown in James Joyce’s stories and rather it seemed to deal with something more realistic and this made me to understand stories easier. Of course, the background itself is not the same, but there are less dramatic parts, so I was able to smoothly continue reading it from the middle of the story. When I looked at the title of the book, I saw a lot of Dublin people, a
