Caring for Plants by Hye-young Pyun

 This short story starts with an accident scene from the beginning. A nurse in the hospital showed that he was seriously injured but survived, and his wife died. I think the problem started with the fact that it was his wife's mother who took care of him. While hiring caregivers, he lives with a lot of help because there are many things he cannot do alone. Of course, this process was not smooth, but the problem began at some point when his mother dug pits in the yard, hired a theraphist, but she didn't call it a starting point, and when he could return to his job as he worked as a teacher in the past, she said he wouldn't. In fact, I had a creepy feeling from this part. However, digging a hole to plant plants made him think that she was trying to kill and bury him by digging a suspiciously large hole in a corner where he could not see well, and covering it with a tarpaulin on the day she called someone. As mentioned above, I thought the fact that she had a grudge against him for her act of disconnecting from society and the death of her wife supported this idea.
 Up to this point, I thought the above was correct, but one thing I missed was that the person who said this was an unrealizable person who had a big accident. In fact, this may be just a person's delusion. However, considering that his wife’s mother cut off his social relationship and blocked his future him, it would be difficult to regard him as just a delusion.

Eveline-By James Joyce(1914) Rating:8/10 For me, I was wondering about the character Evelyn. She lives diligently and takes care of children, but lives under a violent father. If I were in that situation, as I am still young, I would like to do what I want to do and live more freely. But even Frank allowed her to get out of this life, was it really because of her obligation to protect the house? Of course, that's true, but to be honest, I thought she didn't really love Frank. Was she attracted by the expectation that he would take good care of her, that he was a sailor, and that she would get out of this life by leaving for Buenos Aires? If he hadn't told her to go to Buenos Aires, and he wasn’t a sailor, would she have spent time with Frank then?  Also, seeing Evelyn reminded me of the current situation in Ukraine.  The Dead-By James Joyce(1914) Rating:6/10 Two themes came to mind when I read 'The Dead'. The first is paralysis, which has been mentioned in previous stories. The song sung by one person at the end of the party reminds Gretta of a man she loved in the past. Gretta was paralyzed as she recalled the man she loved, Furey, facing death, and her husband Gabriel looked at such a wife and learned that it was because of the man she loved in the past. But I thought it wasn't just over here. Gabriel thought about himself at first, but it seems that this idea spread and made him think about his wife and even others. I thought this was also connected to death. Starting with Furey's death, I thought maybe death would be similar to snow covering Ireland. Like the snow that slowly accumulates in the people there without going away, death may not seem like my job and it may seem like someone else's, but I thought it was not. I think it was the longest story I've ever read

About James Joyce

 In So far, we have learned about James Joyce through ‘the Sisters’, ‘Arabi’ and ‘Eveline’. When I read these short stories in order, the first thing I thought about was that the characters that make up these stories are slowly growing. There was a little boy and a boy who grew up little more and fell in love with the girl next door and a lady with the sailor. In this context, if I read more stories in the future, I expect that character in the story will grow and finally deal with the death of one person. In addition, reading James Joyce's stories, I began to think that all the dramatic and exaggerated stories are not shown in James Joyce’s stories and rather it seemed to deal with something more realistic and this made me to understand stories easier. Of course, the background itself is not the same, but there are less dramatic parts, so I was able to smoothly continue reading it from the middle of the story.
