About James Joyce

In So far, we have learned about James Joyce through ‘the Sisters’, ‘Arabi’ and ‘Eveline’. When I read these short stories in order, the first thing I thought about was that the characters that make up these stories are slowly growing. There was a little boy and a boy who grew up little more and fell in love with the girl next door and a lady with the sailor. In this context, if I read more stories in the future, I expect that character in the story will grow and finally deal with the death of one person. In addition, reading James Joyce's stories, I began to think that all the dramatic and exaggerated stories are not shown in James Joyce’s stories and rather it seemed to deal with something more realistic and this made me to understand stories easier. Of course, the background itself is not the same, but there are less dramatic parts, so I was able to smoothly continue reading it from the middle of the story. When I looked at the title of the book, I saw a lot of Dublin people, a...

Eveline-By James Joyce(1914)

Eveline-By James Joyce(1914) Rating:8/10 For me, I was wondering about the character Evelyn. She lives diligently and takes care of children, but lives under a violent father. If I were in that situation, as I am still young, I would like to do what I want to do and live more freely. But even Frank allowed her to get out of this life, was it really because of her obligation to protect the house? Of course, that's true, but to be honest, I thought she didn't really love Frank. Was she attracted by the expectation that he would take good care of her, that he was a sailor, and that she would get out of this life by leaving for Buenos Aires? If he hadn't told her to go to Buenos Aires, and he wasn’t a sailor, would she have spent time with Frank then?  Also, seeing Evelyn reminded me of the current situation in Ukraine. The reason why people who could escape to a safe country, staying in Ukraine and fighting with guns is because they have a family they want to protect like Ev...

Araby-By James Joyce(1914)

Araby-By James Joyce(1914) Rating:7.5/10 I put myself in the shoes of an adolescent boy, as I did in the past . Not everyone, but someone must have liked a girl around them in adolescence. I don't know why, but from that point on, the ordinary actions that the girl has done seem special, and the greeting she gave me, like other people, feels special. However, as you can't always succeed, you face a wall of reality. It may be a conclusion that the friend was already dating another boy, but in this story, it was a shabby reality with the cold shopkeeper he faced at the bazaar he had gone to. From this point on, the child has realized the reality, so his fantasy about her will be gradually broken. It may feel sad, but I thought it was also one of the most important experiences of adolescence. This is because I can't always look at what I want to look at and believe fantasy as reality. In this respect, there were some parts that I sympathized with, and I think I enjoyed r...

The sisters-By James Joyce

The Sisters-By James Joyce Rating 6/10 I focused on the narrator (young boy) and priest(Flynn). When I look back on what Cotter said about the priest, "Priest was something strange, and children should spend time with people their own age rather than with people like a priest." I was a little cautious about this, but I thought it might be because the clergy was sexually oppressed at the time, so they had an inappropriate relationship, or that the child was still young so Cotter just wanted him to play with his peers rather than these religious things. Also, if I were to think about the word paralysis, I wondered why the place was set in Ireland, and why there was a priest. Perhaps he wanted to say that these religions were paralyzing Ireland at the time, that such religions were not completely clean and that corruption had spread. The last thing I thought about was the narrator of this story. Why would the author set the narrator as a child? The reason why the narrator was se...

Gooseberries-By Anton Checkhov

Gooseberries-By Anton Checkhov(1898) Rating:6/10     After reading this, the first thing that came to mind was about Ivan and Nikolai. First of all, thinking about Nikolai, Nikolai married his rich wife for money, and eventually succeeded in buying land and planting gooseberries in the countryside. However, Ivan thinks he is deceiving himself that he is arrogant and happy. However, from Nicolai's point of view, he achieved ownership of private land in the countryside like his childhood dream and was satisfied with eating gooseberries planted himself. In this regard, it is questionable whether it is right to say that this is Nikolai's delusion and pretending to be happy. Subsequently, if you think about Ivan, Ivan says he is disappointed with Nicolai, who has such a dream, but says he is happier when he lives in the country than in the city which is quite contradictory. In addition, other people, including Aliokhin, are told to do good deeds and live, but Ivan, who says t...
